Heat Treatment
Annealing: This alloy is seldom annealed. Structures of better machinability are developed by normalizing or by isothermal transformation after forging.
Normalizing: 1650-1700ºF (900-930ºC.)
Carburizing: 1650-1740ºF (900-950ºC) and oil quench.
Hardening: Core: 1560-1620ºF (850-880ºC) and oil quench
Case: 1490-1540ºF (810-840ºC) and oil quench
Tempering: 340-410ºF (170-210ºC.)
Machinability : The alloy is best machined in the normalized condition prior to case hardening.
Weldability: The alloy is easily welded, but should be welded prior to case hardening.

Introduction:
5120 steel has high strength and hardenability, in water the critical full hardening diameters are 4-22mm , in oil the critical full hardening diameters are 11-40mm. But its toughness is poorer.This steel in carburiz ation still has grain growth tendency. Quenching cooling directly has big influence to impact toughness. So after carburizing, 5120 steel need 2 times quenching to improve heart toughness of parts, no temper brittleness. The coldstraining plasticity of 5120 steel is high, can be done wiredrawing in cold state. The machinability in high temperature normalizing or quenching and tempering condition is good, but after annealing it will be poor. 5120 steel is pearlite, the weldability is good, commonly no need to do heat treatment after welding. However, for the parts whose thickness is more than 15 mm, it should do the preheating to 100 ~ 150 ºC before welding, also after welding it is no need to do heat treatment.

Application
5120 steel is mainly used for making cam shaft,driven gears of small tractor. This kind of steel also is mostly used in the manufacturing of the high demand heart intensity, surface under wear, section under 30 mm or complex and not big load carburized parts (oil quenching), such as: machine tool transmission gear, gear shaft, worm and piston pins, claw clutch, etc.
